Abstract

Introduction: Health-related quality of life is a subjective perception of physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being. In athletes, a high quality of life is associated with better performance, mental health, and personal balance. Sociodemographic factors such as sex, educational level, socioeconomic status, and place of residence may influence this perception. Objective: To determine differences in quality of life according to sex, educational level, socioeconomic status, place of residence, and sports category among elite Colombian taekwondo athletes. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, and correlational cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of 103 Colombian taekwondo athletes participating in the 2024 G2 national selection camp in Boyacá. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling method was used, and the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was applied, which assesses four dimensions: physical health, psychological health, social relationships, and environment. Measures of central tendency and group comparison tests (p < 0.05) were used. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the environmental dimension according to sex (p = 0.033), with men reporting a better perception. Differences were also found in the psychological dimension according to sports category (p = 0.015), with higher scores among cadet athletes. No significant differences were observed by educational level or socioeconomic status. Conclusions: Sex and sports category influence quality of life perception in specific dimensions. These findings highlight the importance of considering sociodemographic factors when designing interventions to optimize the overall well-being and performance of taekwondo athletes.
