Diferencias de género en uso de aplicaciones móviles de ejercicio en alumnos de Entrenamiento Deportivo

Objective: Evaluate gender influence in use and usefulness of physical activity (PA) Applications (Apps), health perception, and motives to exercise in college students. Methods: 288 college students (192 men, 96 women) age between 19 and 32 (M=22.11, SD = 2.19) answered an online questionnaire to indicate their health status, motivation for physical activity practice, download and use behavior as well as usefulness perception of mobile Apps technology. Gender differences in App use proportions and motivations for PA were evaluated with Chi squared analysis. Gender differences in PA Apps’ usefulness perception were evaluated with Mann-Whitney’s U. Results: Men have higher PA Apps usefulness perception (p < .05), use adherence after downloading (p < .05), and higher perception of health status (p < .05). There were no differences in PA Apps download behavior as a function to PA motivation between genders. The use of PA Apps does not influence health perception regardless of gender. Conclusions: Mobile PA Apps design must consider gender differences. Gender based PA Apps interventions seems to be more appropriate for health and performance objectives.
